Mumbai : In a freak accident, an apartment in Gokuldham housing complex in Goregaon east caught fire after a firecracker strayed into the dwelling. Comedian Sapan Verma, a resident of the building, broke the news on his Twitter account and also uploaded it on his Facebook account. “A Diwali rocket entered one of the flats and before anyone could do anything, the fire had taken over the entire room (sic),” he posted. The incident happened around 10 pm when firecrackers were being burst as part of Diwali celebrations. The firecracker sneaked into the house through an open window. The building was evacuated even as the fire brigade doused the fire. The house was damaged and many belongings were reportedly burnt.
Verma posted pictures of the incident and warned people against bursting crackers. “Today everyone is back in their flats getting ready for the Festival of Lights. Except that one family which is now homeless. If all those messages about not causing pollution or not harming animals by bursting crackers don’t bother you, may be this should (sic),” his post said. However, this was denied by the Dindoshi police, under whose jurisdiction the building is. “No such incident happened. Our officers were in the area and patrolling the entrances to the building,” said a senior officer.
