‘Drunk’ college principal rams into ladies, kills one

Mumbai :  A woman was killed while another was grievously injured after a principal of an engineering college in Navi Mumbai, who was allegedly under influence of alcohol, lost control of his car and rammed into them on early Sunday morning.

The arrested accused, Sunil Chavan (48), was identified as the principal of Indira Gandhi College in Koper Khairane, Navi Mumbai.

The incident occurred at around 3:40 am on Sunday morning. The women, J Kuttikal (54) and Judy Mutello (51), were a part of a rally that had started from CBD Belapur in Navi Mumbai.

The procession comprised over 30 men and women. The accused was driving under influence of alcohol and rammed into the procession.

Kuttikal was killed in the accident while Muthello was grievously injured. The two were immediately rushed to a Municipal hospital in Vashi,” said an official associated with the Turbha police station.

An official from the Turbha police said that Chavan was alone in the Hyundai Accent that he was driving when he lost control of the car (gillian). They have registered a case against Chavan under relevant sections of IPC related to rash and negligent driving along with a charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Chavan’s medical reports were tested positive for alcohol. He was produced before a holiday court on Sunday morning and remanded to judicial custody.
