New Delhi : The communal temperature in Dadri, the village that saw the lynching of 50 year old Mohammad Akhlaq nine months ago over accusations that his family was eating beef, is rising again.

This time the trigger comes from a forensic lab report submitted to the fast-track court. The report was prepared by a Mathura-based Forensic lab and it contradicts an earlier report in which the veterinary officer had said that the meat sample was not beef, but meat of “goat progeny”.

Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has questioned the authority of the new report submitted by the police in court, and has stressed that what is important is punishing a mob that killed a man, irrespective of its motive.

But the BJP would not countenance with anything like that and its members ignored police orders and held a large panchayat demanding action against the family of Mohammed Akhlaq, who was lynched to death in September over accusations that his family was eating beef in their home.

“We give them 20 days. If there is no action, even I can’t guarantee that I can control this public anger,” said the BJP’s Sanjay Rana, whose son, Vishal, has been arrested for Akhlaq’s murder.

The mahapanchayat was initially banned by the police but later they relented in

the interest of ‘‘maintaining peace” in the village. Senior BJP leader Vinay Katiyar has supported the demand of the mahapanchayat for registration of FIR against Akhlaq’s family members & demanded that the compensation given to them be withdrawn.

“The question is that cow slaughter had taken place. The report has come and now FIR should be lodged against those involved in cow slaughter. Those who have been locked up in jail should be released. The compensation should be withdrawn. The government should take back the three houses given to them,” the BJP leader said. It is perhaps for the first time that a political party is demanding the return of the compensation money paid to the family of someone who has been lynched to death.
