Mumbai: Sociological research should address real societal challenges and provide objective solutions while reflecting the concerns of individuals and communities, according to experts who spoke at a one-day national conference organised by the University of Mumbai (MU).
The event, conducted in collaboration with the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) Western Regional Centre and Rashtriya Seva Bharati, highlighted the importance of research that is both meaningful and impactful.

Themed “Investigating the Impact of Socio-Economic Environment on Academic Research and Outcomes: A Policy-Oriented Approach,” the conference brought together distinguished speakers, including Padma Shri Girish Prabhune, Padma Shri J.K. Bajaj, ICSSR Member Secretary Prof. Dhananjay Singh, Rashtriya Seva Bharati’s Vijayrao Puranik, MU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ravindra Kulkarni, Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr. Ajay Bhamare, ICSSR Western Regional Centre Director Prof. Kavita Laghate, Prof. Upendra Kulkarni from Central University of Ajmer, Rajasthan, Prof. Makarand Paithankar, and Prof. Bharti Gore from Delhi University.

Experts also noted that social sciences, being closely intertwined with daily life, can address issues ranging from urban and rural disparities to the challenges faced by marginalised communities. Discussions included the use of technology, the work-life dynamics in urban, rural, and tribal regions, and how meaningful research could bridge these gaps.

Several active researchers and practitioners shared their insights on sub-themes such as rural development, skill enhancement, and government welfare schemes. The event culminated with MU announcing research collaborations with organisations including Devi Ahilya Mandir Nagpur, Swaroopvardhini, Bhatke Vimukt Vikas Pratishthan, Sampoorna Bamboo Kendra, Deendayal Seva Pratishthan, Yavatmal Pragati Pratishthan, Parivartan Mahila Sanstha, Seva Vardhini, Seva Bharati, Savitribai Phule Mahila Ekatma Samaj, Gramayan, and Seva Sahayog.
Experts emphasised the alignment of these initiatives with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, highlighting how programmes such as community engagement projects, fieldwork, internships, and apprenticeships can create socially conscious and responsible citizens.
Over 300 researchers, students, and professionals attended the event, which concluded with the release of a souvenir by the esteemed guests.
