WATCH: 'It Indicates Healthy Eco-System,' Says Experts After Rare Horsehair Worm Emerges In MP's Panna |

Panna (Madhya Pradesh): A rare and interesting creature was recently spotted in Madhya Pradesh’s Motidol Beat of the Mohandra Range, under the South Panna Forest Division.

Forest worker Arvind Kumar Vishwakarma observed this unusual worm, commonly referred to as a ‘Horsehair Worm’ by locals.

Scientifically, this worm belongs to a group of organisms called Nematomorpha

Harmless worm appear suddenly

These worms are extremely thin, thread-like, and appear white or light brown in color. They are usually found in wet soil or near water, often tangled together in clusters.

Their sudden appearance usually confuses villagers and gives rise to myths and superstitions. However, experts say they are completely harmless to humans and large animals.

Horsehair worm’s life cycle

The horsehair worm has an interesting life-cycle.

At its early stage, the worm lives as a parasite in the bodies of insects like crickets, grasshoppers, or beetles. After maturing, the worm influences the insect’s brain and forces it to move toward water.

The worm exits the insect’s body when near water and lives freely in wet surroundings for some time.

The sudden emergence of this worm from soil or water makes people develop and believe in stories about its origin.

Horsehair worm also an ecosystem indicator

According to biologists, this worm is proof of a healthy ecosystem. The presence of horsehair in the environment suggests that the forest has a balance between insect-life and humid conditions.

These worms also help in naturally controlling insect populations, which makes them important for biodiversity.

Forest department makes appeal

Regarding the matter, the forest department has urged the public not to fear or harm these creatures. Instead, they should appreciate this unique creature of nature. The presence of the horsehair worm in Motidol Beat is proof of rich biodiversity and a well-balanced forest environment.
