Bhopal: A state-level virology laboratory has been set up at city’s Gandhi Medical College (GMC) amidst rise in cases of Swine Flu across the country. Commissioner, medical education, Shiv Shekhar Shukla said the laboratory at GMC is the biggest laboratory at regional level, set up at cost of Rs 23 crore.
Virology laboratories would be set up in other medical colleges of the state too, he informed. The virus of Hepatitis-A, C, E, Dengue, Chikangunia, Herpes, Rubella, Texoplasma, Rotavirus, etc would be identified within the state, said Shukla, adding that there would be no need to send blood samples of patients outside the state anymore. This would put a check on expenses and speedy treatment to the patients, he said.
Virology laboratories would be set up in Gwalior, Indore, Rewa and Sagar in the second phase, informed the commissioner. The students of undergraduation and post-graduation would also get training of advanced testing of viruses. A state-level database of new virus would also be developed. Earlier, the testing for Swine Flu was done in virology lab at Delhi.
