Bhopal: 34-year-old SI bleeds to death after hit by speeding SUV; youth held

Hit-and-run accident: 20-year old rammed his car into cop's bike and dragged him for 200 meters before fleeing.

BHOPAL: In a hit and run case, a 34-year-old Sub Inspector was killed when his bike was hit by a speeding SUV near forest colony on Tuesday night. The accused first rammed the cop's bike from behind and then dragged him for around 200 meters, before he fell from the bonnet and died. Habibganj police on Wednesday arrested a 20-year-old Aditya Agrawal from his home in Chunnabhatti in connection with the accident..

Aditya l, son of Ajay Agrawal, was driving at such a high speed that the cop flung onto the bonnet and was dragged for several meters, before he fell on the road. Instead of trying to save the cop's life, Aditya sped away leaving the severely injured policeman on the spot. The accident took place near Forest Colony around 10:30 pm. Passersby immediately rushed Manjhi to JP hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

SI Vivek Sharma said Aditya has been booked under sections 279, 333 and 304 of the IPC.† Police said his medical examination has been conducted to ascertain if† he was drunk at the time of the accident or not. Soon after the accident, Aditya had allegedly tried to remove the blood stains from his car, which was later seized by the police.

While Manjhi was coming from Char Imli side, the SUV reached the accident spot from Rajeev Gandhi Nagar near Habibganj police station. As the two vehicles crossed the forest colony to head to Chunabhatti road, the SUV hit the bike from behind.

Manjhi was allotted a government quarter in the Police Lines at Nehru Nagar but he had taken up a rented accommodation at Chunabhatti and lived with his family including mother, father, brother, wife and a daughter.

Cop was carrying toy for his daughter

Police said Manjhi, posted to the Hanumanganj police station was heading home on his motorcycle after his duty when he met with an accident. He is survived by his wife Saloni Singh, who is also an SI of the same batch and is posted at the Jahangirabad police station. Police seized a broken toy from the accident spot that the cop was carrying for his daughter at home.

Top police officials attend cremation

Manjhi was cremated on Wednesday at Bhadbhada Vishram ghat in presence of top police officials including deputy inspector general (DIG) Irshad Wali, superintendent of police (SP) headquarters Ramji Shrivastav, SP north Vijay Khatri, reserve inspector (RI) Deepak Patil and other cops.
