Cong fails to capture 8 dist Panchayats despite having majority

The Opposition Congress could not install its President in eight districts even though it had a majority among elected members. The party captured the presidents’ post in ten districts but could not manage its victory in districts like Chhattarpur, Tikamgarh, Rewa, Shahdol, Sidhi, Seoni, Rajgarh, Vidisha, Agar. The party had sent observers to manage the president’s election. However, they could not stop horse trading. PCC president Arun Yadav blamed the BJP for engineering defections and capturing votes of Congress-supported members. “The state ruling party used money and power of the administration both to get votes of elected members. The way elections were conducted in MP happened first time in the history,” he said. The Congress was hoping to get president’s post in 16-20 district Panchayat on the basis of its elected members. It lost Seoni district Panchayat president post by one vote. In Khargone, rebel Dedarnath Dabar, earlier associate with the Congress, contested against official candidate Chhaya and won election. Result of Sidhi district Panchayat went against Congress leader as he had camp there to ensure victory of Congress-supported president in the election. Four tie results in Ratlam, Rajgarh, Singrauli and Tikamgarh also did not go in the favour of the opposition party, said party sources.
