Shubman Gill marked his return to domestic red-ball cricket with a century for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy. Battling without much support from the other end, Gill displayed resilience, scoring 102 runs off 171 balls. However, his innings ended in controversy when he was adjudged out in what he believed was an unfair decision.
Gill who was convinced he had edged the ball onto his pads, was visibly frustrated by the umpire's call. With the Ranji Trophy lacking a Decision Review System (DRS), he had no option to challenge the decision. In a moment of frustration, Gill threw his bat to the ground, expressing his discontent.
Karnataka register an innings victory over Punjab
Shubman Gill's century in the second innings went in vain as Karnataka beat Punjab by an innings and 207 runs. After being bowled out for just 55 runs in the first innings, where Gill contributed just 4 runs. For Karnataka V Abhilash picked dup 4 wickets, while Abhilash Shetty picked up 3 wickets.
Karnataka dominated the match, thanks to Ravichandran Smaran's stellar maiden double century (203) and their first-innings total of 475 runs in 122.1 overs. Other Karnataka batsmen did get starts but failed to convert it into big score. For Punjab Jassinder Singh and Markande picked up 3 wickets apiece. in the first innings.
Yashovardhan Parantap and Shreyas Gopal were instrumental with the ball, each taking three wickets in Punjab’s second innings. Karnataka secured a convincing win, collecting seven points, including a bonus point for the innings victory.
