Pimpri-Chinchwad: Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) Commissioner Dr Vijay Suryawanshi has directed officials to complete all drainage cleaning works in the city before the monsoon, officials announced on Tuesday. He emphasised that the work must be completed on time and to a high standard to prevent waterlogging and inconvenience to citizens.
According to PCMC officials, the instructions were given during a review meeting of the Health Department of the civic body. The meeting also focused on preparations for Swachh Survekshan 2026. Senior officials from various departments attended the meeting held at the municipal corporation headquarters.
Dr Suryawanshi said that the civic system must be strengthened to ensure that rainwater does not accumulate anywhere in the city. He also ordered strict action against illegal constructions and encroachments on canals, which often block water flow and increase the risk of flooding.
He added that maintaining cleanliness is a shared responsibility. Citizens must follow waste management rules and support civic efforts. The administration is also taking steps to improve awareness about cleanliness and waste segregation.
During the meeting, officials shared details of the ongoing drainage cleaning work. A total of 145 drains, covering about 94,913 meters, are being cleaned across the city. The progress of the work has improved in recent weeks. It was 4.99% on March 16, increased to 13.83% by March 23, and reached 22.67% by March 30.
Monson Management Plans Reviewed...
Among the zonal offices, the F zone is leading with over 32% progress. A and E zones are also performing well, while B and G zones are maintaining steady progress.
The meeting also reviewed monsoon disaster management plans, climate-related measures, action against plastic use, and arrangements for medical services during the summer.
Officials also discussed initiatives under Swachh Survekshan 2026, including zero-waste slums, waste management projects, awareness drives, and the ‘Majhi Vasundhara’ mission.
PCMC Exposed In Initial Rains?
According to available reports, severe disruption was reported in Pimpri-Chinchwad due to the first unseasonal rains. Heavy showers caused waterlogging across the city, turning roads muddy and difficult to navigate. Citizens faced inconvenience despite paying taxes, raising concerns over poor civic preparedness.
Traffic congestion worsened in several areas, and emergency response appeared inadequate. The municipal corporation faced criticism for failing to complete pre-monsoon cleaning and drainage work on time.
Overall, the sudden rains exposed gaps in infrastructure management and planning, with residents bearing the brunt of inefficient systems and delayed action by authorities.
