Mumbai : In the first of the many changes to come, the toilet block at Andheri station is all set to be free of the foul odour arising from it. The stink was noticed by the newly-appointed general manager (GM) of Western Railway (WR), G C Agarwal, during his first inspection of the station.
Agarwal took charge as the GM of WR on July 7 and was on his first inspection of the suburban section on July 15. Agarwal was escorted by senior railways officials in a local train to Andheri station. The team travelled in all the compartments to give him a common man’s perspective on travelling in Mumbai. Starting his journey from the comforts of the first-class compartment, he got off in between to climb into the second class and even the luggage compartment.
The newly-appointed GM was disheartened to see the Harbour line station at Andheri which is in bad shape. However, the disappointment did not last long after the team entered the new building that has been recently constructed at Andheri. While moving around in the building, the GM decided to inspect the toilet blocks there only to find these dirty and a strong stink emanating from it.
Bringing this to the notice of the senior officials, the GM asked them to fix the problem of the foul odour as soon as possible. A senior railway official who was also present during the inspection said, “The stink was due to faulty planning on our part. The toilet was planned there during the construction of the new building but no one thought about an exhaust for the ventilation of the toilets. With heavy usage of the toilets and no opening for ventilation, the stink is inevitable.”
