Mumbai: Workshops on procedures for student council elections were conducted on Monday by the officials of the Mumbai University (MU) on Monday. Students, teachers and officers of the varsity involved in the elections were informed about framework, procedures and timeline for elections. These elections will pave way for campus polls to be conducted in all public universities of Maharashtra after 25 years.

Training sessions on regulatory framework of elections, procedural aspect of elections and timeline for election programme were conducted to educate about norms and rules of campus elections. Suhas Pednekar, Vice-Chancellor (VC) of MU, said, “These elections help to voice issues faced by students at the ground level. Also, students can contribute at the national level as these elections serve as a platform for campus politics.”

Campus polls were banned in the state in the early 1990s due to untoward incidents. The state introduced new rules and regulations for student elections in public universities. Vinod Tawde, state education minister of school and higher secondary education, said, “Students contesting for elections will have to exhibit their work and propagate their agendas before the voters. It will help students to highlight issues for their development and resolve serious problems.”

Students enrolled in public universities will be able to vote for their candidates of the student’s council. All state public universities colleges need to submit the schedule for elections before July 31 and complete the entire process of elections by September 30.
