Mumbai: The first visuals of the Vande Metro train have emerged from Mumbai's Prabhadevi station, offering a glimpse of the upcoming high-capacity service designed to reduce overcrowding and enhance commuter comfort.
The visuals of the train were shared by a user on X (formerly Twitter). The visuals were captured by a passenger travelling on a local train at Prabhadevi. The video showed the striking orange, black, and beige air-conditioned train heading toward Churchgate, reportedly during a trial run.
Features of Vande Metro Trains
Vande Metro is designed as a rapid shuttle service, aiming to provide a premium travel experience for short-distance commuters. With a speed potential of up to 130 kmph, they will ensure a faster, safer experience for travellers.
The concept is inspired by Europe's 'Regional Trans' trains, and will function similarly to local trains but much faster.
In September 2025, the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd (MRVC) floated a global tender worth approximately Rs 21,000 crore for the procurement and 35-year maintenance of 2,856 air-conditioned coaches.
Mumbai is slated to receive these trains in 12, 15, and 18-coach configurations, which are aimed at reducing overcrowding and enhancing commuter comfort.
The Vande Metro trains will be fully vestibular in design, allowing passengers to walk through the entire length of the train.
Among other features are automatic door-closing systems, higher acceleration and deceleration, cushioned seating, mobile charging points, onboard infotainment, and vendor compartments with separate AC ducts.
These coaches will feature global-standard safety systems, improved braking mechanisms, and optimised passenger flow design.
