Mumbai : Mumbaikars will have to wait for toll free entry in the city as the State government is still studying the pattern of toll at Mumbai entry points. The government will announce it before the civic elections to gain its credit and get it converted into ballot boxes, say sources.
The State government announced abolition of toll at entry points of Kolhapur. There will be no toll in first three months as the three committees appointed to study tolls at Kolhapur have submitted their reports to the government. The government needs time to study these reports about valuation and how much money has to be paid to the contractor as compensation. Then, they will take a final call.
PWD minister Eknath Shinde, on Wednesday, said that on the same line the toll at Mumbai entry points will be abolished very soon.
According to the Mantralaya sources, if government shuts toll nakas at the Mumbai entry points it will cost the government Rs 3,500 crore annually and the government is in no position to bear the burden.
“If the government decides to breach the contract then they have to compensate the interest on the amount which is to be paid to the contractor,” said the official.
“The government will abolish toll before the civic elections in Mumbai and Kalyan-Dombivali as they can stake the credit for it,” sources said.
