Temperature rose to almost 41 degree in the city

Mumbai : The scorching heat in Mumbai claimed life of a 47-year-old Anganwadi worker who died of a sun stroke while protesting at the Azad Maidan ground on Wednesday afternoon.

Mumbai witnessed unusual heat with Colaba recording maximum temperature of 36.3 degree celsius while Santacruz recorded 40.8 degree celsius on Wednesday. The temperatures in Colaba and Santacruz were 5 and 8 degree celsius above the normal temperature.

Sources close to the deceased said that she had a medical history and the sun was a catalyst in aggravating her condition, leading to her death.

The deceased has been identified as Asha Pawar who was a widow and a resident of the Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra. Pawar collapsed on the ground at round 1:30 pm.

A social worker who was present at the spot told FPJ, “The woman had arrived at Azad Maidan with other protestors at around 10 am. In the afternoon, she had food and went away to drink water where she collapsed. A few youngsters who were playing cricket noticed her and informed us after which we called the ambulance.”

Pawar was immediately rushed to the Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital where she was declared brought dead. Her body was then sent to JJ Hospital for a post mortem.

Pawar was among the hundreds of protesters who had gathered on the open ground to demand a hike in remuneration.

A police official attached with the Azad Maidan police station said, “A few of her friends told us that she was operated for a heart condition earlier. We are confirming the same. We are awaiting the post mortem reports after which we will register an accidental death report in the matter.”

Dr Shahid Bharmare, who is a consultant general physician said, “Since the woman was a cardiac patient, it is possible that she must have suffered a cardiac arrest too. Older people are more prone to sunstroke. However, immediate deaths in such cases are highly unlikely. People must drink a lot of water especially since the temperatures have been rising lately.”

Rising Temperature Checks Swine Flu Incidents

Mumbai : City gets temporary respite from swine flu virus with Mumbai reporting no deaths and only 28 swine flu cases on Wednesday. Out of the cases reported, 22 are Mumbaikars and six are out-station patients. City health experts claim that with the rising temperatures, swine flu cases are steadily taking a downward trend. They believe that if the temperature remains to be in the range between 34 and 35 degree Celsius, eventually, swine flu cases will be wiped out from the city by April end.

Medical fraternity claims they are witnessing a downhill in swine flu cases as compared to past two months. Dr Om Srivastava, head of infectious diseases department at Jaslok Hospital, said, “Most of the swine flu patients are getting treated on out-patient department (OPD) basis since their condition is not critical. However, patients who are suffering from co-morbid conditions and are in a critical state are only admitted to hospitals. Rising temperature is the major reason for the swine flu cases to go down.”

Meanwhile, out of the 28 new swine flu cases, 12 are getting treated on OPD basis. The rest 16 are recuperating in various city hospitals and all are reported stable by the BMC’s health department. However, one Mumbaikar is on ventilator.

When asked, Dr Mangala Gomare, head of BMC epidemiology cell, said, “We are not witnessing serious cases in swine flu which is a positive sign. Also, swine flu deaths are of people belonging to high-risk categories. We are hoping that temperatures continue to remain the same, so that we can get relief from the deadly virus.”
