Mumbai : Two days after a woman was brutally murdered in her house in Shivaji Park, the police are yet to catch the killer. Though the police have managed to procure a photo of the accused, they haven’t been able to trace his location.
Belena Cardozo, 57, lived alone in Louis Court, a building located in the quiet lane near Kirti College in Shivaji Park area. She was found lying in a pool of blood on Wednesday by her maid, who had a spare key to the house.
The police suspect a labourer hired by Cardozo for renovation work in her house.
Police sources say the accused is possibly a young man aged about 23-25 years and was one of the workers doing the carpentry work in her house.
The victim’s husband Tom Cardozo is a Merchant Navy Captain and has been at sea for the last four months.
The couple has two children, Tina and Boris, both residing in the United Kingdom.
Police officials recorded the statement of the victim’s sister Delma who had spent the night before the crime in Beleza’s house and left around 8.30 am, a few hours before the murder.
“We believe the victim knew the murderer and had even spoken to him on the day of the murder,” said an officer of Shivaji Park police station.
Beleza, who was expecting her family to gather at their Shivaji Parkhouse for Christmas, had over a month ago hired a contractor to renovate her second-floor house. “We suspect the murderer to be a worker employed by the contractor. The workers who visited the house daily had access to her house and knew that she lived alone,” said an officer from Shivaji Park police station.
The police also suspect the motive of the murder to be robbery but are yet to ascertain whether any valuables were stolen from the house.
