Mumbai : The dengue menace in the city seems to see no end as nearly 1,500 suspected dengue cases have been reported in the city’s civic hospitals whereas private hospitals have recorded 500 confirmed dengue cases in the first 15 days of September. Civic hospitals are witnessing long queues of patients coming in with symptoms such as high fever, cold and chills.

The civic body stated that 90% patients are sent home in a few days after the treatment. However, in the remaining 10% cases, the patients are extremely vulnerable and are at a high risk of mortality as their condition is critical since their admission owing to late diagnosis and treatment.

Civic health officers stated that despite awareness and the constant advice to report to the doctor at the earliest, people are opting for self-medication and delaying their treatment.

Dr Minni Khetarpal, head of epidemiology cell at BMC, said: “The weather is such that people can easily contract diseases and therefore, it has become crucial that people not take their health for granted.”

“We want people to maintain cleanliness in and around their houses so that mosquitoes do not breed. Our surveillances and campaigns are in progress for fighting dengue but it is crucial that we get people’s support and participation in fighting the disease,” the doctor added.

City doctors have warned that the elderly, pregnant women, people with diabetes and hypertension fall into the high-risk category as their immunity is low and they are prone to contracting dengue more easily as compared to healthy people. The symptoms of dengue which include sudden high fever, severe headaches, pain behind the eyes, severe joint and muscle pain and debilitating fatigue.
