Mumbai : A day after the arrest of underworld don Ashwin Naik on charges of kidnapping and demanding extortion money, police sources say more such cases may soon be registered against him.

Senior officers said that investigations have revealed that the gangster was involved in many more extortion demands in the last few months. They said that many businessmen and builders have called them, asking them to take into account their complaint as well.

While he has currently been booked for one extortion charge, police sources inform that in the coming days more such cases might be added against him.

On Sunday, the gangster was caught red-handed by police officers while accepting an amount of Rs 50 lakh from a builder whom he had previously kidnapped and threatened. The police officers arrested him after the builder approached them to register a complaint about the extortion demand.

The gangster was arrested with three of his accomplices who were all present with him at the time of the incident. The court on Monday extended Naik’s police custody till December 24.

The gangster, who majorly operates in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai, was acquitted in 2009 of all charges. He had by then spent 10 years in jail for more than 15 charges including plotting to murder his wife. He has currently been booked under sections 364A, 384, 387, 34 and 120(b) of the Indian Penal Code.
