Mumbai: Seven lakes providing water to Mumbai and her suburbs are running dry, with only 88,743 Thousand Million Cubic (TMC) of water. This is only 6.13% of the total stock left. It is being said, Mumbai is facing water emergency and it is now upto the citizens to use it sparingly. This is a similar condition in Pune city too.
Both the cities are facing acute shortage of water. The reservoirs in Pune are at the lowest. This situation has arisen due to delayed monsoon. In 2018, at this time the water storage was 2,15,157 TMC, which is 14.87 per cent storage.
Now the BMC is planning to tap into the reserve stock. This water reserves will last until July end, claim BMC officials. The monsoon is yet to begin and BMC officials are hopeful the situation will be better soon.
The situation in Pune too is grim. Even after the second week of June, the storage levels in Pune reservoirs are grimly low. Water levels are 1.18 % lower than at the corresponding period last year.
The reservoirs supplying water to Pune city are at 2.282 TMC, which is 9.68%. At the same time last year, there was 16 TMC water, which is 10.86 per cent. If there is no rain soon in the catchment areas, there will be water emergency. - FPJ Bureau
