Mumbai: With less than a month to go, students preparing for engineering examinations are being given last minute guidance by teachers. Students claim they prefer to study at the last minute as they are caught up with assignments, practicals, research work and project submissions throughout the academic year. Teachers are helping solve queries and doubts as students claim the final semester examinations are tough and go on for over a month.

The semester examinations for engineering programmes will begin from May 7. The Mumbai University (MU) has not released the last date of the examinations yet. These examinations usually go on till mid June. Students claim there is a always a gap of three or more days between two papers. And during this gap, they need guidance from teachers who can help them solve last minute doubts.

Students revealed the holiday gap between examinations is the crucial time for preparation rather than the entire academic year. Naina Barwal, a student, said, “We have a three day leave to prepare for an examination and we make the most of this time. During these three days, we try to refer to all books, previous question papers and guides. These penultimate days are far more important than the entire academic year.”

The last minute preparation gives rise to doubts and queries, according to students. Glen Mascarenhas, a student, said, “We need the help of teachers as we have several doubts during examinations. These doubts arise because we refer to a lot of study material and only teachers can help us better understand the concepts at the eleventh hour.” Teachers claim they are willing to help students as engineering examinations are tough and lengthy.

Heena Saibu, a teacher, said, “We understand students are caught up in practicals, assignments, projects and research work throughout the year and do not get sufficient time to understand concepts thoroughly. We will help students who approach us and solve last minute queries but it is better if students study in advance.”  College authorities have informed students to prepare in advance and not wait for the eleventh hour.

A principal of an engineering college, said, “The syllabus of the engineering course is vast. Students may get confused if they try to grasp all the concepts at the last minute. Also, those appearing for their final semester should realise it is an important chance to secure their campus placements.”
