Mumbai: Breaking from previous delays, the distribution of educational kits to students in civic-run schools is set to take place on the first day of the academic year. The BMC administration has assured that all 3.5 lakh students enrolled in municipal schools will receive the complete set of 27 educational items, together and on time, as schools reopen on June 16.

The BMC provides educational kits—including uniforms, socks and shoes, tiffin boxes, and other essentials—to every student enrolled in civic-run schools. All items are expected to be delivered on the first day of school. However, since the scheme was introduced in 2007, the distribution process has often been delayed.

In some years, textbooks arrived only by the second semester, while umbrellas and raincoats were distributed after the monsoon had ended. Former corporators have also criticised the poor quality of school bags and uniforms provided under the scheme.

"The tendering process was completed on time, and educational materials have been sent to schools. Tablets will be provided to 8th, 9th, and 10th grades during school hours to blend traditional and modern learning and familiarise students with technology. Teachers will guide their use to enhance studies,” said a senior civic official.

Education Officer (Primary) Rajesh Kankal added, “Students present on June 16 will receive the materials that day. Those absent will get them on their next school day.”
