Mumbai: Bhendi Bazaar — one of South Mumbai’s oldest and most densely packed neighbourhoods — is emerging as a model for electric mobility and eco-conscious redevelopment.
Under the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust’s (SBUT) ambitious redevelopment project, the area is being reshaped with future-ready infrastructure, including dedicated EV charging facilities — a first-of-its-kind feature in a historic precinct of this scale.
EV Charging Becomes Mainstream in Historic Precinct
The newly completed Al Ezz tower features parking spaces with EV charging stations for 40–50 two-wheelers and 10–20 four-wheelers, setting the stage for a green transition in an area once known for its narrow lanes and traffic chaos.
SBUT: "Not Just a Facelift, But a Reimagining"
“This is not just a facelift — it’s a reimagining of what a historic urban space can be,” said an SBUT spokesperson. “EV integration was a core part of the planning process, not an afterthought.”
Rooftop Solar to Generate Over 600 kW Renewable Energy
Infact, the redevelopment goes well beyond EVs. Rooftop solar panels installed across the precinct are expected to generate over 600 kW of renewable energy, significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Integrated Green Infrastructure for Water and Waste
Rainwater harvesting systems, sewage treatment plants, and organic waste converters have been embedded into the infrastructure to promote circular water use and responsible waste management.
Redesigned Streets Prioritise EVs and Pedestrian Safety
A major feature of the project is the redesign of the internal street network. What were once cramped alleyways have now been transformed into 18-meter-wide roads, built to accommodate both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. These new thoroughfares are designed to support EVs and shared mobility services while providing safer and more accessible public spaces.
