The BJP–Shinde Sena Mahayuti alliance has nominated Ritu Tawde as their candidate for the Mumbai mayoral post. For the deputy mayor’s post. While Shinde Sena's corporator Sanjay Ghadi has been nominated as deputy mayor. The election for the both the post will be held on Wednesday, February 11 at the BMC headquarters. 

The BJP emerged as the single largest party in the 2026 BMC elections, winning 89 seats. Its alliance partner, the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, secured 29 seats. Additionally, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) corporator Ajit Raorane extended his support to the Mahayuti. With this backing, the BJP-led Mahayuti has secured a total of 119 seats, putting the alliance in a ruling position.

The mayoral post was reserved for the women’s open category through a lottery conducted by the state Urban Development Department last month. Over the past two weeks, several BJP corporators—Priti Satam, Alka Kerkar, Ritu Tawde, and Rajshree Shirwadkar—were being considered as potential contenders for the post. However, the BJP maintained strict secrecy and did not announce the name of its mayoral candidate until the last moment.

On the day of filing nominations, the BJP–Shiv Sena (Shinde) alliance held a meeting at BJP's party office in the BMC headquarters. Following the meeting, BJP Mumbai president Ameet Satam announced Ritu Tawde, a BJP corporator from Ghatkopar, as the alliance’s mayoral candidate. Shinde Sena leader Rahul Shewale declared Sanjay Ghadi, a second-term corporator from Dahisar, as the deputy mayoral candidate. Both candidates filed their nomination papers with BMC Municipal Secretary Manjiri Deshpande on Saturday.

Describing the occasion as a “historic moment,” Tawde thanked the party leadership for placing its faith in her. Satam said the new administration would focus on making Mumbai corruption-free and would function with the support and confidence of the Mumbaikars. Meanwhile, Shinde Sena leader Rahul Shewale said the deputy mayor’s tenure will be for one year and three months. Until now, the post was generally held for a two-and-a-half-year term. However, Amey Ghole, the Shinde Sena’s group leader in the BMC, clarified that there is no formal mandate specifying a two-and-a-half-year tenure for the deputy mayor’s post.
