Mumbai: A 29-year-old man was arrested on Thursday for raping a woman in Byculla. The accused, Faisal Shaikh, has a criminal background, said police. Shaikh had followed the victim to an office and raped her. He has been booked under relevant section of the Indian Penal Code for rape.
According to police sources, the woman was on her way to office at Byculla on Tuesday, when Shaikh spotted her and followed her to the office.
Posing as an office boy, Shaikh entered the office and went behind the woman in an office cabin. “Shaikh, a resident of Dongri, has a criminal record for similar sexual offences against women. When Shaikh followed her inside the cabin, he forced himself on the victim and raped her, while covering her mouth.
After a while, when the victim escaped from Shaikh’s clutches, she ran to her home,” said Dinesh Kadam, a senior police inspector of Byculla police station. The woman was stalked by Shaikh in the past, but a complaint was never lodged against him, as he was termed as a roadside romeo, said police. On Thursday, the victim approached Byculla police and registered a case against Shaikh.
The victim was sent to a civic-run hospital for medical tests, where it was revealed the accused had inserted his fingers in her private parts. After the initial report, police immediately swung into action and arrested Shaikh from Byculla compound. He was arrested and booked for rape (section 376) of the Indian Penal Code and was remanded in police custody for five days on Friday.
