Mumbai: The Directorate Revenue of Intelligence (DRI) sleuths have arrested 7 people for allegedly smuggling 110 kilograms of gold worth Rs 35 crore across the city from Dongri and Zaveri Bazaar area.
Among those arrested, one is said to be an Indian national, resident of United Arab Emirates (UAE) who is said to be the main culprit in the matter and the rest are the middlemen and distributors of gold.
While sharing the details of the matter, an officer requesting anonymity told that the gold was shipped to Gujarat port from Dubai, claiming that it was brass and from Gujarat, the shipment was brought to Mumbai by road.
In the city, the gold was kept at two storehouses at Dongri and Zaveri Bazaar and from there, it was distributed across the city with the help of middlemen.
“On Friday, we got a tip-off after which we raided the places and seized the gold and also arrested the accused people. The role and profile of each accused is yet to be examined but we suspect that a syndicate of jewellers is operating behind the entire crime. We are expecting more arrests in future and the matter is currently being investigated,” said the officer.
