The police have arrested a 29-year-old man, son of a retired police officer, for allegedly stealing Rs 9 lakh from his friend.
According to Indian Express, the accused has been identified as Shrikant Nimbalkar (22). The incident took place on January when Shrikant Nimbalkar and two of his friends had gone to Sion to purchase a second-hand car. Samit Karande, also son of retired police officer and complainant in the case, wanted to buy a second-hand SUV, so he asked Shrikant and one other friend, Sandesh Bhatkal, to accompany him to Sion. During the entire time, the money was lying on the backseat of the car.
The cops have said that, while the three were checking out cars in Sion, Shrikant Nimbalkar left by saying he had some work to finish, after which Karande and Bhatkal stayed back. An officer told the leading daily, “After finalising a deal when Karande and Bhatkal returned to the car to get the cash, they realised that the bag of cash was missing. They then approached the police and got a case of theft registered.”
After the theft case was registered, cops formed a team to investigate the matter. During the investigation, the team also scrutinised the CCTV footage. Karande also told cops that Shrikant Nimbalkar left a few minutes before they discovered the theft. Initially, Nimbalkar refused saying he had nothing to do with the crime, but later during interrogation, he confessed to the crime. He also told cops that he had spent Rs 1 lakh and the remaining cash was at his residence.
