Days after a five-day-old baby was kidnapped from Nair Hospital, now the Agripada police have written to state-run hospital to beef up security to avoid such incidents.

According to Hindustan Times, the police questioned how a stranger could walk away with a new-born from the hospital without being noticed by any hospital staff and asked for stricter checks on visitors. The boy, who was born to Dahisar residents Sheetal and Ramesh Salvi, was allegedly kidnapped from ward 7 of the hospital on June 13 by Nallasopara resident Hazel Corriea. She was arrested at VN Desai Hospital the next morning and the baby was rescued and reunited with his parents.

The police, in their letter to Nair Hospital, said that Correia had entered the hospital without being checked and also had walked out of the main gate. Dr Ramesh Bharmal, the hospital dean told the leading daily, "A meeting was convened between the hospital staff and its chief security officer. We have cautioned the staff about the security lapses and asked them to comply with strict procedures. We have decided to increase the number of CCTV cameras installed in hospital premises from three to six.”

The Agripada police arrested Hezal Donald Corriea who kidnapped the baby from the hospital ward while his mother was asleep. She was caught at VN Desai hospital where she went for a check-up, claiming the baby to be hers.

The accused walked into VN Desai hospital claiming she wanted a check-up done for her child who was delivered at home. But the alert constable at the hospital and the staff noticed that the baby had a tag that helped them identify that the baby was delivered in a BMC hospital. This made them suspicious and they started probing her with more questions, which is when the inconsistencies in her responses came to the fore. The constable was also aware that there was a kidnapped baby case registered at the Agripada police station. The lady and her husband are residents of Nallasopara and do not have children of their own. The Agripada police have registered a kidnapping case under section 363 of the IPC.
