Mumbai: Actor Annu Kapoor duped of 4 lakhs in online bank fraud; 3 lakhs recovered by police in 'golden hour'

The accused is being tracked and will be arrested soon, said the Oshiwara police.

Film actor Annu Kapoor was duped with 4,36,000 rupees in bank fraud, out of which, 3,08,000 rupees has been recovered by the Oshiwara police within the ‘golden hour.’ 

According to the Oshiwara police, on Friday, the actor got a call from an unknown caller stating that he is calling from the head office of the bank in which the actor holds an account and identified himself as Krishnakumar Reddy. He informed the actor that his KYC (Know Your Customer) details are not complete and he needs to do it at the earliest or else his bank account will get closed. 

While speaking with him, the accused pursued the victim of his credibility and informed him that he will need his account number and OTP (One time password) for completing his KYC. 

Falling into the trap of the urgency that the fraudster imposed, the victim sent him the details which he demanded. After which the accused also informed him that the KYC has been completed.

After a while, the victim got a phone call from the customer care of his bank informing him that there have been two large amount transactions from his account of 2,00,000 + 2,36,000 rupees, total 4,36,000 rupees. This made the victim realise that he has been duped, and his account was immediately frozen by the bank. 

The victim then approached the Oshiwara police who then contacted the bank manager of the victim’s bank and tracked the two other bank accounts where the accused had transferred the money.

“We immediately made the bank freeze the accounts of the accused which had 3,08,000 rupees in it and we recovered the amount. Swift action during the golden hour always gives better results. Meanwhile, the accused is being tracked and will be arrested soon,” said senior police inspector, Manohar Dhanwade, Oshiwara police station.

A golden hour in crime is the immediate crucial time period after the crime incident which usually has abundantly evidences. 

The actor also expressed his gratitude towards the Mumbai police for swiftly taking action and recovering most of the amount, he took to Instagram and said, “I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to Mumbai police of Oshiwara, cyber crime wing for their immediate and effective action taken against  fraud in my bank account.”
