In a significant philanthropic gesture, Tata Sons and Tata Trusts on Friday announced the formation of a ₹500 crore welfare initiative for the victims of the recent Air India plane crash.

Named the AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust, the fund has been officially registered in Mumbai and will be jointly supported by both entities, with Tata Sons and Tata Trusts pledging ₹250 crore each.

The trust will oversee a range of welfare activities, including an ex gratia payment of ₹1 crore to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic incident. Support will also extend to those seriously injured, covering their medical treatment and rehabilitation.

In addition, part of the fund will go towards restoring the B J Medical College Hostel, which sustained structural damage in the crash.

The devastating accident occurred on June 12, when an Air India flight from Ahmedabad to London crashed shortly after takeoff, claiming 260 lives—including 19 people on the ground.
