On Tuesday morning, a 10-year-old boy fell into an eight-inch drain which was only covered by an unhinged iron slab in Vasai. The boy was later rescued by locals.

According to the Hindustan Times, the 10-year-old boy has been identified as Atulya Pednekar. The incident took place when  Atulya, along with his mother, was on his way to cricket practice at Chimaji Appa Ground. That is when Atulya stepped on a slab which was covering the drain, after which the slab slipped under his weight and he fell in. Seeing the boy slip in the drain, the mother raised an alarm after which a local resident rushed to their help. The local leaned into the drain and pulled Atulya, waist deep into muck and garbage, out.

The boy has suffered minor bruises and was given first aid. The boy’s mother and the man who rescued the 10-year-old told the leading daily that the drain should have had a hinged lid and alleged that the contractor merely put an iron slab to cover it. In the meanwhile, Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) has said that they have initiated an inquiry and appropriate action will be taken once they receive the report.
