MPCC claims the govt issued a notification that builders developing luxury towers have been exempted from paying a premium to the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai if they are building extra areas

Mumbai : MPCC spokesperson Sachin Sawant on Saturday criticised the Fadnavis government’s decision to exempt builders of luxury towers from paying a premium to the BMC. He accused the state government of being a “seth ji ki sarkar” (government of merchants), similar to that of the government at the Centre.

“It is now out in the open that the state government issued a notification that builders developing luxury towers in Mumbai have been exempted from paying a premium to the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) if they are building extra areas. This will only benefit high-profile builders whose apartments range from Rs 40-100 crore,” Sawant said.

Since such flats are not available for sale to the common man, the BJP is only playing with the feelings of people by exempting builders from paying extra charges, he added.

Terming the state government to be a “seth ji ki sarkar”, Sawant said, “It is busy attending to wealthy people and is ignoring the needs of those belonging to the middle class.”

“When such high-priced flats cannot be bought by the common man, it means that the government is following a ‘kuch ka saath, kuch ka vikas’ (support for few, development for few) agenda. How can you exempt the rich from paying taxes to the government and make others suffer? The decisions taken by a government is for the betterment of society and not only for a section of people,” he said.
