Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday announced a compassionate decision for police dogs, stating that they will continue to remain with the police force even after retiring from active duty.
CM Fadnavis, in his latest statement in favour of the police dogs, said police dogs that have served the force for 10 years should not be made to suffer after retirement. He noted that retired police dogs are often given up for adoption, which can adversely affect their well-being.
Concerns over dogs' well-being
According to information from the state government, several police dogs reportedly face mental well-being issues after completing their 10-year service, with some even refusing to eat following their separation from the police force and their handlers.
Fadnavis emphasised that dogs that have served the police force for a decade should be cared for and allowed to spend the rest of their lives comfortably.
Retired dogs to remain with force
Under the new decision, police dogs will retire from active duty after completing 10 years of service but will continue to stay with the police force and their respective handlers.
Fadnavis also clarified that the Home Department will bear the expenses related to their food and other requirements.
Moreover, the decision aims to ensure the welfare of retired police dogs while allowing them to remain with the handlers and force with which they have spent years serving the state.
