Mumbai: People living in the city’s Western suburbs may already suffer due to their workplace being far away from their homes. Adding to their woes are the incessant road works the area has seen over the past two years. According to sources in the BMC, only 290 of the proposed 460 road works have been completed in the Western suburbs so far.
The BMC undertakes road improvement works in every part of the city once in three years. Works may go on for as long as four years, much to the distress of commuters. Traffic jams become a common sight and citizens can only hope that the debris is cleared before monsoon sets in.
Among the proposed major roads in the Western suburbs, 82 are asphalt roads and 46 are made of concrete. But the civic body has been able to complete only 43 and 4 respectively, making citizens wonder when all of the proposed 460 will see the light of the day.
“The rest of the roads are in process. Work orders for some major roads in Dahisar, Borivali, Goregaon and Andheri have been given recently and work is expected to start within a fortnight,” said a senior official from the BMC’s Roads and Traffic Department.
[alert type=”e.g. warning, danger, success, info” title=””]Mumbai seems to be in a complete shambles with road repairs going on in every part of the city. Haphazard work proceeding at snail’s pace has failed to give citizens a smooth ride, making their commute utmost difficult. The Free Press Journal takes up the cause for the city highlighting the lackadaisical approach of the authorities and contractors. The concluding part focuses on – Western Mumbai[/alert]
Besides, the department has proposed a revamp of 234 small roads in the suburbs but has only been able to complete 165 until December 2014. They are expecting another 49 asphalt roads and 16 concrete ones to be completed by the end of this year.
Tenders for road works to the tune of Rs 250 crore have been floated already and another Rs 200 crore worth of works are expected to be started soon. These include MG Road in Kandivali, North-bound Link Road in Malad, a 45 metre wide stretch of Santacruz-Chembur Link Road and the CST-Hansmudra Road that will be perpendicular to the Western Express Highway.
“Road works are necessary but we residents have a lot of problem with the debris that keeps lying there in subsequent days. A part of the area in Bandra was dug up for laying utility cables by a private company and the debris lied there for long. Who is responsible to clear that?” asked Robin Nath, secretary of the Bandra Bandstand Residents’ Association.
