As Mumbai and adjoining areas received heavy showers on Wednesday, the Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Palghar, and Thane including Mumbai for the next four days till June Saturday (June 12).

As of today, the IMD has issued a 'red alert' for Mumbai, and neighbouring Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts, warning of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places there.

An orange alert has been issued for several districts for the coming few days, as "heavy to very heavy rainfall" will be "very likely" in pockets of the Konkan region, including Mumbai. "The Konkan Kinarpatti including Mumbai may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall for next 4 days," Shubhangi Bhute, Scientist, IMD Mumbai said.

For Raigad district, the IMD however has issued a red alert for June 10 and an orange alert for the following three days.

The Met Department said, “Heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places predicted in various districts on Konkan belt during orange alert days.”

An orange alert has also been issued for Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur districts – located in western Maharashtra on June 12 and 13 i.e. Saturday and Sunday. IMD further issued orange alerts for Bhandara, Gondia, and Gadchiroli districts located in the Vidharbha region on June 13.

Mumbai has been receiving rainfall since Tuesday night. The weather department recorded rainfall in Santacruz at 50.4 mm and in Colaba at 65.4 mm.

"Monsoon has arrived in Mumbai, normal arrival date is June 10 every year so it has arrived prior to the average arrival date," said Dr Jayanta Sarkar, Deputy Director General (DDG), IMD Mumbai.

The IMD in a tweet said that the southwest monsoon is likely to advance into more parts of Maharashtra and is likely to advance into more parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, some parts of Odisha, and more parts of West Bengal during the next two days.
