Mumbai: Students applying for admissions to First Year Junior College (FYJC) can now register online and fill in their personal details. Principals of all state-run schools and junior colleges are being given training and workshops by the state education department in order to conduct the process without any errors. Students can fill in their details like names, age and address in the first phase of the online admission process. The second phase will begin after results of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) board are declared. In the second phase, students can fill in their preference list of maximum 10 colleges.

This year, around 307 guidance centre have been established to help students with queries. Bhaskarrao Babar, assistant director of education, Mumbai region, said, “We have established 37 guidance centres at different locations of the city to help students with any errors faced during admission process. Also, we have imparted training to principals of all schools and junior colleges to guide students with various  steps of the process.”

This year, around 10 per cent seats are reserved for the in-house quota, five per cent for management, 16 per cent for the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) and 10 per cent for Economically Weak Section (EWS). Babar added, “The reservation of seats under in-house quota has been reduced from 20 per cent to 10 per cent. It is the decision of the state so we have to abide by it.”

Students claim this decrease in the number of seats will affect the admission process. Pallavi Naik, a student, said, “We prefer to study in the junior college through in-house quota as it is easy to secure admissions. But now, it is going to be tough as we just have 10 per cent seats.” While Vivek Kapadia, another student, said, “Apart from reservation, the FYJC admission process had a number of errors last year. We hope the guidance centres help us when we face any difficulty.”
