Mumbai: This must be a first of sorts. First, the entire facade of Mantralaya underwent extensive ‘cosmetic surgery’ after the massive fire on June 21, 2012, setting back the state exchequer by Rs 200 crore. A huge staircase was built at the entrance to the seat of power in Maharashtra, mirroring those leading to the Asiatic Library, for ‘decorative’ purposes. This addition was supposed to be the most striking feature of the building. However, suddenly on Saturday evening, work of demolishing the staircase was begun, for ‘security’ reasons.

According to the fire department, the stairs are likely to pose a hazard in emergencies and could hamper firefighting operations. Police too believe the staircase is obstructing the  view of the interior of the building and poses a security risk.
