Mumbai : Even as the civic body has decided to shut down the Deonar and Mulund dumping grounds, it has also invited tenders for clearing out the garbage that has been dumped at the Mulund dumping ground. This will involve the scientific processing of waste to completely rid the dumping ground of it. Meanwhile, the BMC will convert the waste dumped at Deonar dumping ground to energy with the help of bio-reactors, and plans to appoint a consultant to look over this process.

The BMC has planned to shut down the Deonar and Mulund dumping grounds as they have exceeded their capacity. As substitutes for these two places, the civic body plans to double the capacity of the Kanjurmarg dumping ground and allot a 52-hectare plot at Taloja to set up a dumping ground.

As the Mulund dumping ground is expected to close down completely by 2016, the BMC needs to clear the area of all its waste, which amounts to thousands of metric tons. This waste will be converted to energy and some of it might be recycled.

Meanwhile, in March this year, the civic body initiated a pilot project to convert solid waste into biogas at its Kanjurmarg dumping ground. The project uses bioreactor technology to convert solid waste to fuel as a source of energy to run machines. The BMC has made 141 hectares of land available for this project

Mumbai generates about 9,500 metric tonnes of garbage everyday, of which 3,700 metric tonnes goes to Deonar, 2,600 metric tonnes to Mulund and another 3,000 metric tonnes to Kanjurmarg.
