Mumbai : The Deonar police arrested a couple and their accomplice for stealing a three-month-old baby from a woman a month ago. The arrested couple has been married for 15 years and could not have a child from their marriage.
The arrested accused has been identified as Shahnaz Shaikh, her husband Wahid and their accomplice Ishant Khantey. Police sources said that the couple decided to steal the woman’s child after she refused to give the child to them for adoption.
Shahnaz had allegedly got friendly with a woman who was a single parent of a three-month-old girl. Shahnaz told the police that she had confronted with the woman and told her that she couldn’t officially adopt a child as they did not have proper documentation. She then asked the woman if she would let them adopt their child to which the mother refused.
The couple then decided to steal the child from the woman. “The couple grew close to the woman and last month they all went for an outing with the girl to Juhu beach. The mother of the girl left her daughter with the couple while she went to purchase something to eat. That’s when Shahnaz fled with the child,” said an official associated with the Deonar police station.
Shahnaz allegedly fled with the child to her native place while Wahid stayed in the city. Wahid admitted to the police about the crime after they constantly detained and questioned him about his wife’s absence.
