Mumbai : The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking, in order to save money, has passed an order to cut down the quantity of fuel given to senior officials as “perks”. They say that cutting down on the free fuel (diesel and petrol) to the senior most officials will help them save Rs 40 lakh annually.

The move taken by the General Manager (GM) of BEST, Jagdish Patil, was passed during the committee meeting on Monday.

However, it was sharply criticised by officials who felt it was too “trivial” a thing to do.

A senior officials pointed out that prior to cutting down on the free fuel, the BEST management had stopped the free supply of napkins, pins and refills of ball pens as cost-cutting measures.

According to the new proposal passed on Monday, senior BEST officials including the GM will get 65 to 80 litres of petrol a month as against the 100-125 litres a month granted earlier.

“The fuel allotted to us is not sufficient and we often end up spending our own money. This is because we are made to go to various places as a part of the job. Now reducing the fuel quantity further will only worsen the situation,” another official said.

Committee Member Sunil Ganacharya said: “The free petrol/diesel was allotted to senior officials as perks as the management was not able to give them a hike in their pay.”
