Mumbai: Asma Sheikh moves from footpath to Marine Drive hostel

Teenager sold lemon juice to make ends meet and passed her SSC exam despite all odds

Asma Sheikh’s journey from pavement near Azad Maidan to Savitribai Phule Girls’ hostel situated at Marine Drive. Minister of Higher and Technical Education Uday Samant has accepted the request made by Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant to give Asma admission in the girls’ hostel. Samant has assured that after Asma will be admitted in the hostel after the Covid-19 facility will be closed down.

Asma, who sells lemon juice with her parents and stays on the pavement of Azad Maidan, passed her 10th exam despite all odds. Seeing her interest in education, Yuva Sena headed by Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray visited her and gave her clothes, food, and a cheque of Rs. one lakh as emergency help. Yuva Sena also took responsibility for her further education.

Subsequently, former MP Milind Deora helped her in getting admission in the college. He wrote, “Delighted that Asma has secured the option to study at Mumbai’s prestigious KC College. My deepest gratitude to Principal.’’

After her results, Asma had said that she was working very hard and even studied under the street lights. She informed that she used to study at night because it was less crowded then.
