Mumbai: Even as the financial capital is reeling under the fear of the third wave of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic, the graph of cases reported between March 2021 to June 2021 has shown a sharp decline between May and June. The Free Press Journal gives a lowdown on how amid the second wave of deadly covid19, the case curve has finally seemed to have flattened.
Mumbai on Monday reported 529 new Covid-19 cases, the lowest since, February 16 when the city reported 461 cases. On Tuesday, the city reported 575 new cases including 14 deaths due to Coronavirus infection.
The second wave of Covid-19 hit the city from the second weak of February, however, the number of cases reported daily as well as the active caseload of the city peaked during mid-April.
According to the dashboard data of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), on March 14, 2021, the active case count of the city stood at 13,940, it drastically jumped to 92,464 between April 11 and April 12. However, the number of Covid-19 cases has dropped in the maximum city now, and the active case count too has declined to 15,550 as of June 14.
"Even as the curve has started flattening, does not mean we have lowered the guard. We are still on alert and busy preparing to face and battle the third wave is being anticipated. There has been a drastic decline in the number of cases that have been reported daily and our aim now is to bring it down further. At the same time we are also looking at controlling the number of deaths," said a senior BMC official.
Currently, only five wards in the city have an active caseload of over 1000, these include R-Central ward (Borivali and parts of Charkop) with 1445 active cases, K -West (Andheri West, Juhu, Versova) with 1391 active cases followed by R-South (Kandivali), P-North (Malad) and K-East ward (Andheri east, Vile Parle and Jorgeshwari) with 1184, 1094 and 1049 active cases respectively.
However, R-North ward (Dahisar) has been showing rapid growth of cases this week in comparison to the other 23 administrative wards. As of June 14, the growth rate in R-North stands at 0.14 percent as against the overall average growth rate of the city at 0.09 percent. R-North ward also has recorded the lowest doubling rate of 482 days as against the overall average case doubling rate of the city which is 702 days.
The city currently has 86 sealed buildings in 10 wards, the remaining 14 administrative wards have zero sealed buildings. K-West ward tops the list with 24 sealed buildings. There are a total of 2959 sealed floors across the city, the highest number of sealed floors are in K-East ward - 283 and T ward ( Mulund) - 214. There are only 19 active containment zones (slums and chawls) left across the city.
These containment zones are scattered across six wards. The remaining 18 wards have zero containment zones as of March 15.
