2 minors drown, 3 rescued by fisherfolk from Arabian Sea off Mumbai's Worli

The tragedy happened when the minors were reportedly playing near the sea at Vikas Gully in the Worli Koliwada area around 3.30 pm.

Mumbai: Five childrens drowned in a sea at Worli koliwada on Friday afternoon. The children were brought out by fisherfolk. Two of the children were declared dead. The deceased children have been identified as Kartik Choudhary (8) and Savita Pal (12).

Kartitki Gautam Patil (13) is critical and undergoing treatment in ICU KEM hospital. Aryan Choudhary (10) and Om Pal (14) are the names of other injured children who are being treated at Hinduja hospital.

Fisherfolk retrieved all 5 boys from sea

According to the BMC, The incident happened around 3.38pm near Vikas Gully, Nr. Hanuman Mandir, Koliwada, Worli.  Five children were rescued by residents and admitted to Hinduja hospital and KEM hospital in a private vehicle before the Fire Brigade arrived. After enquiry with the locals the Fire brigade revealed that nobody was missing in the sea. 

Sanjay Manjrekar, Chief Firebrigade officer Said "The children were rescued by the local fishermen before we arrived on the spot. According to the locals, the children were playing near the seashore when the incident occured." 

Hemangi Worlikar former local Shiv Sena corporator said, "The children were from Worli Koliwada, they were playing at the seashore when all of sudden water level increased and they drowned. I visited KEM hospital and Kartiki Patil was scared because of the incident. I hope she will recover soon. Unfortunately two children have died." 

According to senior police inspector Mahesh Mugutrao, Dadar police station, the moment the children started drowning, a 79-year-old man immediately jumped, in an attempt to rescue them. 

"His name is Narayan Koli, who resided in the same locality and was familiar with the children. He started frisking the water body to rescue the children. He managed to rescue two children after which some other people jumped in to help him," explained Mugutrao. 

The locals along with the fire brigade personnel rescued three children. Kartiki Patil, is in a critical condition at the moment, at KEM Hospital, while the two other boys were taken to Hinduja Hospital. They are out of danger. 

P.D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre confirms that 4 minors were brought in to the hospital for emergency treatment for a case of suspected drowning. “Sadly we confirm that two of the four minors that were bought to the hospital were confirmed dead on arrival. The other two minors were immediately treated by the paediatric emergency team and provided the necessary treatment. They are currently under treatment and observation,” said hospital spokesperson.
