In a world where every spare second is filled with scrolling, swiping or streaming, doing absolutely nothing feels almost… unnatural. But Gen Z, as always, is flipping the script. A viral trend called "rawdogging boredom" is gaining traction, and it's all about embracing stillness instead of escaping it. Yes, instead of distracting or doomscrolling, many young professionals are turning to this simple yet surprising habit to reset their minds and detox from workplace fatigue.

What exactly is Rawdogging Boredom?

Rawdogging boredom is essentially the practice of sitting with boredom – no phone, no music, no snacks, no distractions. Unlike a full digital detox that requires stepping away from devices for long periods, this is a quick, intentional pause.

It could be during a commute, before a meeting or even in between tasks, just letting your mind wander without stimulation. The idea is to allow thoughts to settle naturally, instead of constantly feeding the brain with content.

Why is this trend growing?

The rise of this habit is closely linked to a different kind of workplace fatigue, 'boreout'. While burnout stems from overwork, boreout is caused by under-stimulation, repetitive tasks and lack of engagement.

Recent data highlights this growing issue. A Gallup study suggests that nearly 54% of Gen Z and young millennials feel disengaged at work. Adding to this, reports point to a strange imbalance in today’s job market where while older employees are dealing with layoffs, many younger workers are struggling with too little meaningful work, leading to boredom and mental fatigue.

What Gen-Z actually feel

For some, the trend is already part of their daily routine. Srushti Bhoite, a young entrepreneur, shares, "As a 22 year old female entrepreneur, Yes I would say I do it and it is pretty useful to clear out thoughts and sit with myself to schedule the day or even further the week in my mind and prioritise what matters the most… it's effective to sit still and think out whatever is going on so to increase productivity and creativeness overall!"

Another Gen-Z professional, Amer Singh, adds, "Personally, I do it on a daily basis. Instead of scrolling through reels or distracting myself, it's better to use my free time doing something productive or sit with my thoughts. Sometimes, I even chant names of God or do meditation for at least 10 minutes."

While it may sound too simple to work, rawdogging boredom is less about doing nothing and more about reconnecting with your thoughts. Whether it truly solves workplace boreout remains to be seen – but for now, Gen Z seems ready to sit with the silence.
