Shabana Azmi Health Update: Hospital says veteran actor's condition is stable

Actor Shabana Azmi was injured in an accident on Saturday afternoon on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway in Maharashtra's Raigad district.

The Raigad police told ANI, that Shabana Azmi and her driver were injured in the accident.

"Javed Akhtar was also present in the car, but he is safe," ANI quoted the police to say.

According to an India Today report, MGM Hospital officials have clarified that Azmi received minor injuries to her nose.

"No other visible injuries till now. She is right now in state of shock. Treatment going on. Condition stable," officials said.

Reportedly, the veteran actress was later referred to Mumbai's Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.

The accident took place around 3:30 pm near Khalapur, over 60 km from Mumbai, when the car in which she was traveling rammed into a truck, Raigad Superintendent of Police Anil Paraskar told PTI.

She had initially been rushed to MGM hospital in Navi Mumbai for treatment.

Highway police patrol teams had rushed to investigate the accident site.

Reportedly they were going to Khandala where they have a house towards Khalapur. Azmi was sitting behind the driver.

The incident comes just a day after Javed Akhtar celebrated his 75th birthday in Mumbai.

Prayers and condolence messages poured in after the news broke. But not everyone had the same sentiments.

Many Bollywood personalities and politicians took to social media to express hope for a speedy recovery.

"Shabana Azmi injured in road accident on Mumbai- Pune Expressway OMG! Praying so hard," Swara Bhasker wrote, sharing a news article.

"Praying for fast recovery of Shabana Azmi who is seriously injured today in a road accident on Mumbai-Pune expressway," wrote Sanjay Nirupam.

"The Mumbai-Pune expressway has always been dangerous and there is little or no monitoring to prevent rash driving. Have seen so many terrible accidents there. Hope #ShabanaAzmi is fine. Dear @OfficeofUT please improve safety on this route urgently. It is quite a death trap," wrote Hansal Mehta.

Actress Kubbra Sait took to Twitter to offer "prayers and speedy recovery".

"OMG! This is terrible! Praying for @AzmiShabana ’s safety and wishing her a speedy recovery!" wrote Ranvir Shorey.
