New Delhi: Congress President Rahul Gandhi has earned the ire of the Supreme Court for suggesting that the Apex Court had vouched his oft-repeated assertion of “Chowkidar chor hai.” Seeking his reply by April 22, the Bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna fixed the next hearing on April 23.

The court was responding to a contempt petition filed by New Delhi BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi. After the Supreme Court had allowed the submission of leaked Rafale documents, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi had claimed a moral victory and said the court has made it clear that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has “committed theft”.

Lekhi has contended that Rahul had projected his personal statement as the Supreme Court’s order to create prejudice.  Referring to Rahul’s utterances over admissibility of documents in the Rafale case, the bench, in its order, reportedly said that the court “had no occasion to record any such views or make any such observations and what was decided by the court was the legal admissibility of certain document to which objections were raised”.

The order also said that “no views, observations or findings should be attributed to the court in a political address to the media and in public speeches, unless such views, observations or findings are recorded by the court”. The court observations may not mean much in terms of initiation of contempt proceedings against the Congress president, but it does undermine his credibility and brings into sharp relief his political naivety.

Again has a crack at Narendra Modi surname

NANDED: Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday attacked yet again Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue of corruption and demanded how come all “thieves” have ‘Modi’ as a common surname, as he referred to fugitive businessman Nirav Modi and former IPL chairman Lalit Modi. Gandhi made the remarks while addressing a rally in Nanded Lok Sabha seat.

Keeping up his attack on Modi on the Rafale fighter jet deal, Gandhi asked the prime minister how come industrialist Anil Ambani got the offset contract despite having no experience in manufacturing such planes. He also reiterated his charge that Modi put Rs 30,000 crore of the tax-payer’s money into Ambani’s pocket.
