Women and Child Welfare Minister Maneka Gandhi and her son Varun have swapped their seats. So, Maneka, who is the sitting MP from Pilibhit, will shift to her original constituency Sultanpur. Varun Gandhi, 38, in turn, will contest from Pilibhit. The swap was reportedly Maneka’s idea, said NDTV sources.
One reason possibly is that the BJP was less sure of Varun’s chances in Sultanpur this time. Sultanpur is next door to Amethi, the constituency of his cousin and Congress president Rahul Gandhi. In 2014, Varun had defeated a strong Congress candidate, Amita Singh.
