Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Friday requested PM Modi “to stop worrying about the image and start worrying about the problem in front of you, which is now killing people and will probably end up killing millions of people.”

In an online Press conference, he called for the vaccination at the earliest lest the virus changes its shape and goes beyond any control. “If you allow the virus to spread in India and do not stop it, it will keep changing its form with more complicated variances,” he said. He expressed concern, “this virus is continuously changing its form and the government needs to change its way to contain the spread of this disease.”

“The PM is trying to repair his image, but his image is gone, dead... It is time the PM stands up and leads the nation. These are the times where he has to show his leadership, his courage, his strength. The PM must stand up and deliver... don’t be afraid. Time has come to show what a good leader you are. So please deliver.”

Rahul said his sincere appeal to the PM is: “Bring the country together. Shut the space for viral spread. Stop the lies. Vaccinate extensively.” He stressed “Vaccines are the only permanent solution to Covid and lockdowns, social distancing and masks are only temporary steps.”

He regretted India has vaccinated only 3% of its population so far, leaving the rest open to infection and death.

“We are beyond politics now, millions of people are going to die. This frame is wrong. The frame has to be we are fighting this together now,” Rahul said with a parallel Twitter hashtag #RahulExposesCovidFailure.

In the sharpest attack on PM Modi, Rahul squarely held him responsible for the second wave of the Covid, simply because he “did not understand Covid at all”. The country may undergo "multiple waves" if vaccination continues at the current space, ridiculing the government for claiming to complete vaccination by December, without a reality check on the vaccines’ availability.

“The first wave no one understood...but the second wave is the PM’s responsibility. His stunts (nautanki)... His failure to fulfil his responsibilities is the reason for the second wave,” the Congress leader said.

Rahul bluntly accused the government of suppressing information, saying it is “central to the philosophy of the RSS.”

Rahul instilling unnecessary fear, says Prakash Javadekar

Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar on Friday lambasted Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi for attempts to instil a fear in the minds of the people by questioning the government’s fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

On Rahul claiming the people will die for want of a quick vaccination, Javadekar said the government has already drawn up a plan to administer 216 crore vaccine doses by December this year to cover over 108 crore people. He claimed the government’s vaccination drive will end by December itself. In a press conference on behalf of the ruling BJP, he said India is the second nation to administer the highest Covid vaccine doses.

He taunted Rahul he was only mouthing the ‘Toolkit’ script to attack the PM and the Centre on the efforts to fight the pandemic and call it a ‘nautanki’ (drama). He said use of such a derogatory word about the PM at a time when he is fighting the virus is an insult of the country and its people.
