Chennai Weather Update Latest: Heavy Rains Predicted As Cyclone Fengal Closes In

Cyclone Fengal is closing in and eastern coast of India, especially in the south has begun to feel the effects. I has been raining in Chennai and India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more heavy rains. Here are the latest weather updates.

Cyclone Fengal is still in the Bay of Bengal, away from the eastern coast of India, but its effects are being felt in states in the region. Chennai city and Chennai District have seen considerable rains in last few days and more heavy rains are predicted for Thursday (November 28). In 24 hours before Thursday, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have seen thrice the amount of average rains it gets this time of the year. It being seen as an effect of Cyclone Fengal

Chennai and Tamil Nadu Weather Updates

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that heavy rains are possible in Chennai city and district. At the time of publishing of this story temperature in Chennai was 26 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity was at 74 per cent.

In addition to Chennai, heavy rains are expected in Ranipet, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Perambalur, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai, Pudukkottai, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam and in Karaikal.

Rains have seen a spike especially in the coastal districts. The IMD has issued yellow alert for Chennai and advised people to remain updated about weather updates.

Orange alert has been issued for Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpattu and Ranipet districts. IMD has advised people to 'be prepared' for challenging conditions.

Where is Cyclone Fengal Right Now?

The deep depression in Bay of Bengal that is going to develop into Cyclone Fengal is still some distance away from Chennai. IMD said on November 28 that the depression is 480 km south-southeast of Chennai. From Puducherry, it was 410 km away in the southeast.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has already chaired multiple meetings and has taken stock of state's preparedness if Cyclone Fengal strikes. The CM has asked top government officials to ensure that people are evacuated to safe areas if such a need arises.
