The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed a list of 323 feature films eligible for this year’s honours, with the 97th Academy Awards just around the corner. Among the contenders for the prestigious Best Picture award, seven Indian films have made it onto the list including Girls Will Be Girls, backed by Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal, and Randeep Hooda's Swatantrya Veer Savarkar.
The seven Indian films on the list include Suriya's Kanguva (Tamil), Prithviraj Sukumaran's Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life (Malayalam), Shahana Goswami's Santosh (Hindi), Randeep Hooda's Swatantrya Veer Savarkar (Hindi), Payal Kapadia's directorial All We Imagine as Light (Malayalam-Hindi), Richa Chadha's Girls Will Be Girls (Hindi-English) and Indira Dhar Mukherjee's Putul (Bengali).
The voting process for the 97th Academy Awards nominations will begin tomorrow, January 8, 2025, and will conclude on January 12, 2025. The final list of Oscar nominees will be unveiled on January 17, 2025.
The Oscars 2025 ceremony is scheduled for March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood.
The Live Action Short category, a standout entry is Anuja, a short film, with an Indian connection, which is produced by two-time Oscar-winning producer Guneet Monga.
On the other hand, Kiran Rao's Laapataa Ladies retitled Lost Ladies, was selected as India's official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards but, unfortunately, did not make it to the shortlist for the 2025 Oscars.
The film starred Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan.
