Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A 36-year-old man, who was detained by police on charges of kidnapping and rape, allegedly committed suicide at a police station in Narsinghpur district, sources said on Wednesday.
The incident took place at Paloha police station of the district late on Tuesday night. Following the incident, four police personnel including Paloha police station incharge Saroj Thakur have been suspended. A judicial probe has also been ordered.
Sources said the deceased identified as Virendra, a resident of village Richhawar under Gadarwara police station of the district had eloped with a minor girl, a few days ago. Following the complaint of the girl's family members, a case of kidnapping was registered against him.
Sources said Virendra was detained by police in Pithampur and brought to Paloha police station Tuesday. The police have also recovered the girl. As per the girl’s statement, a case of rape was registered. He was also booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
The police said that he was to be produced before court on Wednesday, but he hanged himself using handcuffs.
Additional superintendent of police Sunil Shivhare said the autopsy has been carried out and the body has been handed over to family members.
